The gay scene in Seattle
Capitol Hill is Seattle's undisputed gay heartland. Pike/Pine corridor and the blocks around Broadway are home to queer bars, cafés, bookshops and community spaces that give the neighbourhood a lived-in, neighbourhood feel rather than a sanitised "gay district." The atmosphere leans social and inclusive — cruise-friendly venues sit comfortably alongside relaxed mixed spaces, and there's little of the attitude you might find in larger cities.
Pride in late June draws enormous crowds and is one of the biggest on the US West Coast, so book accommodation well ahead if you're visiting then. The rest of summer is peak season generally, with long daylight hours and a sociable outdoor culture. Seattle winters are grey and rainy, but that keeps locals indoors and socialising — the sauna scene stays busy year-round. A small tip on local etiquette: Seattleites tend to be friendly but value personal space; a nod or a smile goes a long way before diving into conversation.
