- The city's Medical Center and Midtown districts are walkable to key venues, but for anything further afield, use rideshares — public transport coverage is limited outside the central areas.
The gay scene in Houston
Houston's gay hub is the **Montrose neighbourhood**, a walkable, tree-lined area just west of downtown that has been the heart of queer life in the city for decades. You'll find a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere here — cruise-friendly without being intimidating, social without being cliquey. The area mixes long-standing institutions with newer spots, and the crowd tends to be friendly and unpretentious.
Houston's subtropical climate means the scene stays active year-round, but things peak around **Pride in June** and cool-weather months (October through February) when outdoor socialising is at its most comfortable. The city runs on cars — Houston is famously spread out — so having a rideshare app handy is essential for getting between venues, especially late at night. Tipping generously is standard practice; it's part of the local culture and very much expected.
