Useful to know
- Same-sex relationships have been fully legal in the Netherlands since 1811, and the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2001.
- Most gay saunas and cruising venues in central Amsterdam are within a 10-minute walk of Centraal Station.
- The GVB day ticket (dagkaart) covers unlimited tram, metro and bus travel across the city, making it easy to hop between neighbourhoods.
- Dutch law requires all indoor public spaces to be non-smoking, so saunas must provide a designated smoking area — usually outdoors.
- Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory in the Netherlands; rounding up to the nearest euro at the door or cloakroom is the local norm.
The gay scene in Amsterdam
Amsterdam's gay quarter is centred on the **Reguliersdwarsstraat** and the nearby **Warmoesstraat** in the city centre — two streets with very different energies that together capture the breadth of the scene. Reguliersdwarsstraat is sociable and mixed, while Warmoesstraat leans more cruise-friendly and leather-oriented. The scene is famously inclusive and unpretentious; dress codes are relaxed compared to many European capitals, and venues generally welcome everyone regardless of background.
**King's Day** (late April) and **Amsterdam Pride** (early August, centred on the famous canal parade) are the undisputed peak periods — expect prices to spike and accommodation to fill up months in advance. Outside of these events, the city stays lively year-round, with autumn and winter bringing a cosier, more local crowd to the saunas and bathhouses.
