The gay scene in Essen
Essen's gay scene is compact but sociable, centred loosely around the city centre and inner districts within easy reach of Essen Hauptbahnhof. It tends to attract a local, regular crowd rather than the tourist-heavy scenes you'd find in Cologne — which actually makes it a more relaxed and authentic experience for many visitors. The atmosphere leans cruise-friendly without being exclusively so; mixed ages and a broad crowd are the norm.
The scene is fairly consistent year-round, though weekends naturally see higher footfall at cruising venues and saunas. Being in the Ruhr conurbation, Essen also benefits from proximity to the gay scenes of Bochum, Dortmund, and Düsseldorf — all reachable in under an hour — making it a practical base for exploring the wider region. German sauna etiquette applies: towels are expected at all times outside wet areas, and respectful behaviour is the standard.
