Gay saunas in Sofia

Sofia is Bulgaria's lively capital and by far the country's biggest city, sitting at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the west of the country. It punches above its weight for culture, nightlife and affordability — making it an increasingly popular stop for gay travellers exploring the Balkans. Sofia Airport (SOF) is well connected to major European hubs, with budget carriers making it easy to reach from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Getting around central Sofia is straightforward. The metro is clean, cheap and expanding, and most of the gay-friendly venues cluster close to the centre, meaning you rarely need more than a short walk or a single metro stop to get where you're going. Accommodation is excellent value compared to Western European cities, so it's worth staying a few nights rather than just passing through.

Useful to know

The gay scene in Sofia

Sofia's gay scene is modest in size but genuinely welcoming, centred loosely around the Centre and Studentski Grad (Student City) neighbourhoods. The atmosphere leans social and relaxed rather than flashy — Sofians tend to be friendly and unpretentious once the ice is broken, though public displays of affection in less central areas are still best kept discreet. Bulgaria has made slow but steady progress on LGBTQ+ visibility, and Sofia Pride has grown considerably in recent years, typically taking place in early summer and bringing a more festive energy to the city.

Outside of Pride season, the scene is quieter but consistent. Weekends are busiest, and the cruise-friendly venues tend to attract a mixed-age, local-heavy crowd. It's worth noting that English is widely spoken in the centre, so communication is rarely a barrier for visiting gay men.
