Useful to know
- Same-sex relationships have been legal in Bulgaria since 1968, though there is no legal recognition of same-sex partnerships or marriage.
- The Bulgarian lev (BGN) is the local currency — card payments are widely accepted in Sofia, but carrying some cash is useful for smaller venues.
- Sofia Airport (SOF) is around 10 km from the city centre; the metro Line 1 connects the airport directly to the heart of the city in under 30 minutes.
- A single metro or bus ticket costs around 1.60 BGN (under £1), making it one of the cheapest urban transport networks in Europe.
- Most central gay-friendly venues are within easy reach of Serdika metro station, a practical base for exploring the city on foot.
The gay scene in Sofia
Sofia's gay scene is modest in size but genuinely welcoming, centred loosely around the Centre and Studentski Grad (Student City) neighbourhoods. The atmosphere leans social and relaxed rather than flashy — Sofians tend to be friendly and unpretentious once the ice is broken, though public displays of affection in less central areas are still best kept discreet. Bulgaria has made slow but steady progress on LGBTQ+ visibility, and Sofia Pride has grown considerably in recent years, typically taking place in early summer and bringing a more festive energy to the city.
Outside of Pride season, the scene is quieter but consistent. Weekends are busiest, and the cruise-friendly venues tend to attract a mixed-age, local-heavy crowd. It's worth noting that English is widely spoken in the centre, so communication is rarely a barrier for visiting gay men.
